Let Them Read Them

I love a good book – do you?

Neil Gaimen (a wonderful author in my humble opinion) hits the nail on the head with this statement.

We learn far more and are encouraged to grow when we do things we enjoy. Especially with children. Play is so important.

In teaching our children to read we give them a much needed life skill and a source of entertainment for life

Enforced reading of books they find boring or are uninterested in is detrimental to their learning experience even if it does hit an educational target.

Allowing them access to a wide variety of books and giving them choice really helps with their willingness to read.

My son infinitely prefers to read Northern Lights than the books set him by school.  Interestingly Northern Lights is a more difficult level but he makes the effort and thoroughly enjoys the story and new words he is learning. This learning follows through into his vocabulary and written work so the benefit is huge.

My brother Gavin flatly refused the “Roger Red Hat and Billy Blue Hat” books when he was younger.

However he had a keen interest in sport and always asked Pa questions on what The Times newspaper had written in the sports section.  Pa told him he needed to learn for himself and as he was interested he did.

Gavin is hugely academic and a prolific reader now so The Times and Pa did well.

So let us read our children bedtime stories, share stories with them, give our children access to a wide variety of books and let them read them.

Have a wonderful week.

Kindness Is A Language – Random Acts Of Kindness Challenge

Kindness is indeed a language that everyone can understand and appreciate

How about trying out giving a random act of kindness to someone this week?  Be it family, friend, neighbour or stranger and see how much they appreciate it.

It truly does not need to be big, keep it little, a compliment, a note, a text, a coffee, some time etc

I would love to hear how you go.  You can message me on my Facebook Page Simply Ripping or contact page on my blog

Lets share the kindness

Talk to yourself like you would to someone that you love

Talk to yourself like you would talk to someone you love – Brene Brown

This is such a beautiful quote. If we spoke to our friends the way that we speak to ourselves, would you have many friends?  We can really beat ourselves up.  Yes, we can make mistakes, may not perform as we’d hoped, not got a result we wished for etc.  Talk to yourself as you would your friend.  With compassion, realising what’s upset you and working out how to move forward.  Yesterday was Valentine’s Day and we celebrated love.  How about sharing some with yourself?

I Am More Than My Story

I am more than my story – Eve Patti / Simply Ripping

I am more than my story.  I love this saying and if you wonder what it means then here we go.

Sometimes things happen and it makes our hearts sad, angry, unhappy etc and we have to work through it.

However a wise man said to me, “do not let the event become you, do not let it be you.  Enjoy the rest of what life has and what you are.”  So in those times I say to myself “I am more than my story”

Think of the people in your world, friends, parents, daughters, sons, brothers, sisters etc and the joy those relationships have

Think of who you are as a person, kind, loyal, quirky, funny, loving, cook, massage therapist, artist, music lover etc

Look at the world around you and see the sun rises, the clouds in the sky, the wind blowing through your hair, the way the sun feels on your skin, the sound of a stream, music, art, a book, the sound of children, the stars in a night sky, your body and how it feels to just breath and behold just how beautiful it all is if you take the time to appreciate it.

So many wonderful things that make you and are all around you

You are more than your story.

Eyes Of A Child

Seek the wisdom of the ages but look at the world with the eyes of a child – Ron Wild

Think H likes his Father Christmas. Just love the wonder in everything through H’s eyes.

Bye Bye 37 – Hello 38 :)

Bye Bye Age 37 and Hello 38 🙂

Age 37 has been a good year:

  • Stronger and Leaner – Hit a lot of Personal Bests e.g. Deadlift 120kg, Glute Back Bridge 90kg, Walking Lunges with 28kgs etc Would have chuckled if you had told me that 12 months ago
  • Physique wise I have worked hard to improve my physique with good results and now have clear goals in my head where to take this next
  • My key principles of always trying to give loving kindness, compassion, joy and freedom to those around me (and to myself) remains and will be something I continue to strive for
  • H is just wonderful – listening to him and watching him grow is an absolute delight
  • To all of you in my world I just adore you and am thankful for everything you do

And because I just love a good quote and this one seems apt as my sister Tam Tam says on Instagram

“The only thing that’s left to do is live!”
